September 4, 2024 – After meeting with the Attorney General’s Office and viewing partial bodyworn camera footage and security footage of the NYPD killing of Andre Mayfield, his father, Joseph Mayfield, released the following statement:

"Losing Andre was hard enough. Viewing the video of his death doubles the pain my family feels.

My son clearly wasn’t well at that moment and the officers should have realized this. Any reasonable person would have. Andre was a quiet young man who kept to himself. He liked playstation games and going for walks.

This was a young man who needed care. Why didn’t the NYPD try harder to save my son’s life? Why didn’t Officers Elijah A. Chaer and Jefferson Bellevue try to deploy their tasers again? The officers could have made so many different choices to de-escalate the situation, but instead they gunned Andre down in under a minute.

We appreciate that the Attorney General’s Office showed us partial video before releasing it publicly, but we’re disappointed that they did not show us the full video, as agreed. Only seeing partial video leaves us with more questions: Did the officers even try to provide medical aid? What is the reason for keeping the rest of the video from us?"
