The family of a man who was fatally struck by a police van last year is suing the NYPD.
Ronald Anthony Smith was killed in April 2022 by a speeding NYPD van on Eastern Parkway and Schenectady Avenue.
“I think about him all the time,” said Smith’s sister Julie Floyd. “I was supposed to dump his ashes, but I can't.”
The lawsuit comes two months after the New York Attorney General Letitia James declined to bring criminal charges against the officers responsible for the crash.
In a lawsuit, Smith's family claims that the officers were not responding to an emergency at the time of the crash and had no reason to be driving in the middle of the road, at almost twice the speed limit in rainy and dark conditions. They also allege that the officers failed to provide appropriate first aid after the crash.
