In response to the video footage of an NYPD officer using a vehicle megaphone to shout obscenities at a New Yorker, the Justice Committee released the following statement from Co-Director Loyda Colon:
While this pandemic is claiming thousands of lives, this ugly and disturbing verbal attack by an NYPD officer on a New Yorker who appears to be in distress underscores the ongoing and, too often, deadly epidemic of police violence and misconduct against our most vulnerable communities.
Shame on Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio for giving police officers free rein to abuse and harass New Yorkers and increasing anxiety and fear in these uncertain times by entrusting the NYPD to enforce social distancing.
We demand that the police officer(s) involved in this incident be fired immediately. We also thank the courageous person who documented this incident and provided this CopWatch footage. We call on all New Yorkers to CopWatch while practicing social distancing. Justice Committee's guidelines for CopWatching as safely and effectively as possible during the coronavirus pandemic can be found at bit.ly/COVIDCopWatch.
